Board Effectiveness & Development

“Boards need to think deeply about the way in which they carry out their role and the behaviours they display, not just about the structures and processes that they put in place.” Baroness Hogg ex Chairman of  FRC

Experience shows us that it is good practice to carry out effectiveness reviews on a regular basis as this helps stimulate thinking on how to carry out roles and governance most effectively and can contribute significantly to performance improvement.

To ensure we are addressing the particular challenges you face we work in a bespoke way, for example developing the review questionnaire with you in response to the consulting conversations we have and working with you once a report is written to really understand what the key messages mean. We will work alongside you to help you gain clarity of these and support you in thinking about how to move forward. We aim to;

  • Develop your understanding of what you are doing well, to enable you to continue to build on these strengths
  • Identify any barriers that might impede effectiveness to achieve
  • Agree the priorities for the Board’s development and
  • Help you create a more effective Board

As part of this we will use our experiences of working with other Boards and Executive teams, bringing in some different perspectives and insights and an objective view of how you are working. We are known for the sensitivity with which we can address, not avoid some of the difficult Board dynamics that can occur and need to be understood for Boards to be more effective. Typically we work with you following the framework outlined below.
